The scope of works involved the design and construction of a single carriageway two-way grade separated road. It was extended approximately 7km from the existing Section 1 at Riverway Drive to connect with the existing intersection at Shaw and Dalrymple Road, which was reconfigured as part of the project scope. The project included six bridges, drainage structures, earthworks, pavements and road furniture. The Ring Road opened three weeks ahead of the contractual completion date despite 187 days of rain, including three flood events.

The Ring Road provides a bypass linking the Bruce Highway to the south and University Drive to the north of Townsville and Thuringowa. The bypass has reduced the level of heavy traffic through the Townsville and Thuringowa street network by providing a 100km/h single lane motorway standard carriageway.
